Understanding Candida Overgrowth
Candida is a term that can strike fear in the hearts (and guts!) of many. While candida is a normal part of our gut microbiome, when it overgrows, it can impact health. Below we look at some of the reasons candida overgrows, what symptoms are associated with candida overgrowth and how we look to address the overgrowth.
Candida doesn’t just overgrow on it’s own; it's orchestrated by specific triggers within our body's ecosystem. The imbalance of gut bacteria, commonly known as dysbiosis, can set the stage for candidal overgrowth. Antibiotic use, can inadvertently upset the microbial equilibrium. A reason not often considered when looking at candida overgrowth is the presence of factors such as heavy metals.
With candida overgrowth, we often see a range of symptoms emerge, which signals the imbalance within. These will include susceptibility to acne, boils, and skin infections. The appearance of a white coating on the tongue, recurring urinary tract infections, and thrush provide additional red flags. We can also see fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, sugars cravings, sometimes leading to binge eating. In our digestive system, we can see symptoms like bloating, gas, and constipation. Ear infections, tonsillitis, and blocked sinuses can also be a sign of candida overgrowth.
Traditional candida management focusses on eradicating the overgrowth. However let’s debunk the notion that quick fixes such as candida diets, anti-fungal treatments, and detoxifying cleanses are the ultimate solutions. Rather, the focus should center on supporting an environment that can keep candida under control.
When we attempt to address candida in isolation, it is akin to addressing the tip of an iceberg without acknowledging its submerged mass. While taming candida is part of the puzzle, the larger picture encompasses supporting the underlying ecosystem. A vital part of our treatment strategy lies in transforming the environment that nourishes candida's growth. We need to shift from an approach which relies on eradicating candida to an approach that addresses the source. When we delve into the root causes – rebalancing gut bacteria and addressing toxicity – the environment changes.
Essentially, Candida overgrowths can give us vital clues to underlying health concerns. Recognising the subtle dance between this microorganism and our body's equilibrium can pave the way for a more holistic journey toward health.
